Pick and pack, explained
General notes
What is picking and packing in a warehouse?
Picking and packing in a warehouse is a system of selecting customers’ orders and placing them directly into a shipping box. Businesses with e-commerce services use pick and pack for the delivery of small orders.
Once an online order arrives at the warehouse, our workers diligently gather each item. Most orders contain products located throughout the storage facility.
Why does the method matter?
How workers gather products, how your inventory is organized, what management system you use and other factors can all affect the efficiency of the picking and packing stage.
How is pick and pack different from kitting?
Pick and pack selects the items for each order after the order arrives. Kitting pre-assembles items into kits that are ready to ship before any order arrives, so a kit is picked as one SKU. The two work together: we pick with precision for single orders and for kitting services alike, from one inventory record.
Picking and packing methods
There are multiple strategies for streamlining pick and pack. Depending on your business, you may use:
Piece picking
A single employee fills a single order at once, walking through the inventory and hand-selecting every item.
Batch picking
An employee fulfills orders in batches instead of one at a time. A picker may take three boxes to sections A, B and C on one trip.
Zone order picking
A single employee is assigned to a specific area of the warehouse. If an order needs items from multiple zones, the box is usually moved between zones by conveyor.
Wave picking
An employee packs multiple orders in a single section. This form of pick and pack requires the greatest intra-facility logistics.
Our solutions
Our pick and pack solutions
Minimize hassle and fulfillment costs with our team. Pick and pack is used primarily for our e-commerce retailers. From organizing your inventory to coordinating our team, we will work with you to create a custom system that makes sense for your business needs.
We’ve streamlined our processes to pick the correct products in the right quantities and place them in the necessary packaging. Orders arrive through EDI or online ordering, are picked against real-time inventory, packed — by machine or by hand — and handed to the carrier.
The same building holds the stock, builds the kits and packs the orders, so a program that also runs subscription boxes or retail packaging draws on the same inventory record.
Your success is our success.
